Angelina Jolie to take on diplomatic role at UN

Angelina Jolie, who has been working at the UN refugee agency as a goodwill ambassador for the past ten years, has been promoted to special envoy to draw attention to some of the world's worse humanitarian disasters using her fame.

In her new role the Oscar-winning actress, will represent the UN at a "diplomatic level", focusing on "large scale crises resulting in the mass displacement of people".

It is the first time the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has named a special envoy.

Elsewhere in the global body, such posts are usually reserved for career diplomats or retired politicians.

Jolie has visited more than 20 countries in her role for the UN including Afghanistan

"Her work does go substantially beyond what we would typically see as being the normal role of a goodwill ambassador," the Sky News quoted Adrian Edwards, UNHCR spokesperson, as saying.

"I don't think you need a rocket scientist to see the benefits that she is bringing in terms of the attention that she is getting for the plight of the world's displaced," Edwards said.

Jolie, who recently got engaged to her partner Brad Pitt, has travelled to more than 20 countries for the agency, including Afghanistan, Bosnia, Haiti, Iraq, Pakistan and Sudan.

As well as giving her time to the agency, she has also donated large amounts of money to the organisation - which is dependent on voluntary contributions.

The 36-year-old will not be receiving any monetary compensation for her role, and has rather given at least 5m dollars which has helped build schools in Kenya and Afghanistan.

Her interest in humanitarian affairs was instigated while she was filming Tomb Raider in Cambodia, and when she researched the agency's work in Sierra Leone in 2001.

UNHCR works to help almost 35 million refugees and internally displaced people around the world.

It was established to aid millions of Europeans displaced during World War II and has since become one of the world's most prominent humanitarian organisations.

"Ranbir Kapoor rejects Subhash Ghai's next"

Mumbai: More than three years since the debacle of 'Yuvvraaj', talk is that Subhash Ghai is making another film, a youthful musical romance with a dose of comedy and action. And the filmmaker was really keen to have Ranbir Kapoor on board.

In fact, he also sought help from Rishi Kapoor to help convince the young actor to sign the dotted line. However, Ranbir expressed his inability to do the film due to lack of dates.

Now, word is that Ghai wants Imran Khan to do the role. A well-placed industry source tells us that after 'Yuvvraaj' (2008), starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, flopped at the box-office, the filmmaker opted to take it easy, preferring to oversee his productions for a while.

"However, none of the films like 'Paying Guests', 'Kashmakash' and 'Love Express' got any notice on release. And then, Subhashji himself fell ill," says our source, adding that the filmmaker was diagnosed with and treated for gall-bladder stones last September.

Now, back on his feet, the filmmaker is all set to plan his next. Speaking about Ghai allegedly seeking Senior Kapoor's intervention to rope in Ranbir, our source says, "Subhashji felt that since they've done films like 'Karz' before, Rishi would help get Ranbir on board.

However, Ranbir conveyed that he's already committed to films helmed by Anurag Basu, Ayaan Mukherji and Anurag Kashyap. So he has no dates for months to fit in Subhashji's film." Now, Ghai is waiting for Imran to return from Rajkot, where he's shooting for Vishal Bhardwaj's next.

Ghai maintains, "Though I like both the actors, neither have I a script nor have I offered them any film at any point in time. So the question of declining doesn't arise." Further, the filmmaker said that he's working on two different projects, "including one with Salman Khan. We're producing three movies this year."

Pakistan needs a massive political change – Imran Khan

Pakistan needs a massive political change – Imran Khan
Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan has expressed that the country needs a massive political change in order to move forward in the modern world and to meet the challenges at the domestic as well as at the international front.
Imran is without doubt the most popular political leader amongst the educated class of the country since last eight years, since he took a principle stance against the so-called war on terror. The cricketer turned politician has always advocated for dialogue
instead of use of force. Time has proved him right as now even the US is trying to negotiate with Taliban.
Over the years, the Chairman PTI has proved his honesty and sincerity with the country through amazing works like Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and the NAMAL University.
As a result of all incompetence of the traditional political parties, PTI emerged as a major political force in Pakistan last year and has become a symbol of change.
Some of the political analysts of the country are of the opinion that PTI is going to offer a massive challenge to Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League (N) in the upcoming general elections.
While talking to the press, the cricketer turned politician said that his party is about to give a clear-cut future policy very soon and will start a nation-wide membership campaign from the 25th of March, 2012 and after that PTI will hold elections
within the party.
Imran vows that his main objective is to eradicate corruption from the country.
He said, “We are coming out with a road map to bring change which has become inevitable now, To curb corruption and promote merit in the country is our main mission. To end seething confusion, a comprehensive party structure will be put in place."
There is no doubt about the fact the Imran is the most popular political figure in the country at the moment but whether his party will be able to make a huge impression in the coming elections, remains a massive question mark. It is surely going to be a
huge task for PTI to dismantle the hegemony of the two mainstream parties.
